Spring Equinox

Posted on Mar 20th, 2007 by Beagle : Questionizer Beagle
Tonight winter officially hands over the reins to spring.  Of course, winter is known to be reluctant to do so, like a housemate who just doesn't understand that the lease is up and he needs to move out.  Tonight we are expecting record low temperatures, in the single digits.

Spring is a more gentle season, easing her way in as the days progress.  Sometimes it has seemed that spring is so subtle that summer has arrived before I have gotten used to the idea that spring really is here.  Already bulbs have busted from the soil, although they are buried at the moment under last weekend's snowstorm.  Winter has a temper.  Signs that spring is ready to be on the scene sometimes make him a bit testy, so he throws things around.  I am sure he can use some rest, however, once he realizes his work is done for the year.

My daughter has been looking forward to this day.  She seems to think that it is the shortest night of the year.  She suggested last night that she did not need to sleep so much because of this, and so should be allowed to stay up longer.  I tried to convince her that the equinox means the nights begin to get shorter now, but she was not interested in an astronomy lesson.  She just wanted to be read another book.  Instead, I told her a story about a little girl, just like her, who hiked a mountain and discovered a new flower that no one had ever seen before.  Hey, it could happen to her one of these days, right?

It seemed fitting that today, as the seasons turn, and especially as the chill of winter marks its passage, I receive an acceptance letter for publication of one of my poems.  In fact, I posted it here earlier in the month.  Ten Considerations When Using a Bowline will be published in Sierra Nevada College Review in June.  It always makes me shout something out loud (this time it was "Yeah baby!") when I receive a letter that says "We are pleased to accept...for publication."  Such a letter is a fine way to begin spring.

Tonight the crescent moon will hang just below Venus when the equinox occurs at 8:07 PM.  Winter will not sneak out but will shout and kick one last time.  In a couple of weeks, the snow will be gone and mud season will have arrived, marking spring in these parts much more notably than the equinox.

Excellent news. Your poem is lovely. I'm glad we bumped into against each other as our blogs posted today. I was a poetry major and I heartily encourage your continued efforts.
